VUB AI Webinar Series: AI & Data-driven Solutions amid the COVID-19 Crisis

During the Corona crisis, scientific research groups of various fields have committed themselves to help key players in the healthcare, the economy, and policymakers. As the VUB AI Experience Centre embodies different multidisciplinary research groups, some of our affiliated researchers have been heavily involved in creating solutions for the different challenges our society was recently faced with. As such, the AI Experience Centre found itself in a unique position to witness the AI & Data-driven challenges our scientists worked on. For this reason, we have created a webinar series for an audience of technology and research experts, as for policymakers to learn about the key takeaways from these projects across several sectors.

Each session invites experts from different fields who share their experience, provide insights, and finally, give recommendations on how to prepare society and their specific research field for such a phenomenon. Join us to learn from first-hand experience and to enhance collaborations between different stakeholders.

The first session (Monday, May 11, 2020: 11.00-12.00) welcomes Prof. dr. Ike Picone from the Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology (SMIT) research group and dr. Tom Willaert from the Artificial Intelligence Lab. The two senior researchers will first discuss the role of news organisations, social media & fake news analysis in times of the COVID19 crisis. Then they will elaborate on the technological challenges to then finally share the key conclusions for media players and policymakers. 

The second online webinar will be held on Tuesday May 12, 2020: 17.00 – 18.00. The AI Experience Centre has invited researchers from Applied Mechanics and BruBotics to talk about their work amid the crisis. Prof. dr. Bram Vanderborght, ir. Albert De Beir, ir Lieven Standaert, and Prof. dr. Mark Runacres will join us on this occasion to share their knowledge on Open Source actions in the field of Mechanics & Robotics (Producing Open Source Ventilators, 3D printing challenges Decathlon Mask). They will conclude with the most important lessons learned and by outlining the challenges that are still ahead of us. Interested?

The third session is joined by Prof. dr. Jef Vandemeulebroucke (ETRO) and UZ Brussels colleague Prof. dr. Johan De Mey (Radiology). Together with Dirk Smeets (ICOMETRIX) they will talk about CT Lung Image Analysis and AI and discuss the technological and functional challenges they encountered at UZ Brussels when applying AI techniques in this emergency context. The ICOVID project is one of the outcomes of the several tracks VUB researchers were involved in. Come prepared and you will get the chance to ask questions from experts at the end of the session. This session takes place on Friday May 15, 11.00 – 12.00.

Prof. dr. Mireille Hildebrandt & Prof. dr. Gloria González Fuster (LSTS) will discuss the continuing challenge of AI & Data Protection Law in the context of the current COVID-19 crisis on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, 14:00 – 15:00. EU data protection law targets the protection of all fundamental rights and freedoms that are at stake when personal data is processed. This is even more pivotal during emergencies such as the corona crisis, noting that emergency measures may be hardwired in ICT infrastructures and repurposed long after the virus has subsided.

Prof. dr. Ann Nowé, the head of the Artificial Intelligence Lab together with Prof. dr. Kurt Barbé , member of the Artificial Intelligence Lab, and Prof. dr. Tom Lenaerts who is a member of the VUB Artificial Intelligence Lab and the ULB Machine Learning Group will tackle some of the most frequently asked questions related to AI & Robotics in the COVID-19 crisis: Which are the optimal prevention strategies for infectious diseases? How can computers automatically discover these strategies using artificial intelligence? In doing so, they will also address decision making processes by explaining how to mimic or take into account the “human” in a modelling context on Wednesday, June 3. 2020.

Alongside the researchers from the different research groups of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, experts from the European wide CLAIRE network will be invited to engage in the debate. At the end of each webinar, 15 minutes will be dedicated to answering questions from the audience, so come prepared!  Each session will be introduced by Hans de Canck, the manager of the VUB AI Experience Centre.

VUB AI Experience Centre Webinar-reeks van start: AI- en datagedreven oplossingen tijdens de COVID-19-crisis

Het VUB AI Experience Centre start een webinar reeks op die inzichten en vooruitzichten van VUB experten delen in de bestrijding van de COVID-19-crisis. Deze serie gaat van start op maandag 11 mei 2020: 11.00-12.00 uur.

Tijdens de Corona-crisis hebben onderzoeksgroepen uit verschillende domeinen zich geëngageerd om samen met belangrijke spelers in de gezondheidszorg, de economie of beleidsmakers oplossingen te zoeken. Het VUB AI Experience Centre bundelt de kennis van verschillende multidisciplinaire onderzoeksgroepen waarvan sommige van deze onderzoekers nauw betrokken zijn geweest bij deze projecten. Het AI Experience Centre heeft als doel AI, Data & Robitics technologie en inzichten hierover sneller en beter naar bedrijven, domein experten en beleidsmakers over te brengen. Daarom zetten we in deze tijden van social distancing deze specifieke webinar reeks op.

Elke sessie nodigt experten met verschillende achtergronden uit die om hun recente ervaringen te delen, inzichten te geven en ten slotte aanbevelingen te  doen voor zowel de samenleving als ook stil te staan bij verdere onderzoeksuitdagingen die COVID19 & AI gedreven technologie met zich hebben meegebracht. Hoe we met zijn allen kunnen bijdragen aan een AI voor het algemeen welzijn (AI for the Common Good).

De eerste sessie (maandag 11 mei 2020: 11.00-12.00 uur) verwelkomt Prof. dr. Ike Picone van de onderzoeksgroep Studies in Media, Innovatie en Technologie (SMIT) en dr. Albert De Beir, ir. Lieven Standaert en prof. dr. Mark Runacres delen hun kennis over hun Open Source acties op het gebied van Mechanics & Robotics, meerbepaald de productie van Open Source Zuurstof Ventilators en 3D printing uitdagingen bij de aanpassing van Decathlon Diving Masks. In deze sessie wordenniet alleen de lessons learned maar ook de uitdagingen die ons nog te wachten staan geschetst. 

De derde sessie wordt voorgezeten ​​door Prof. dr. Jef Vandemeulebroucke de onderzoeksgroep ETRO. Hij vertelt over de CT Long Scan analyses en AI uitdagingen, samen met UZ Brussel collega Prof. dr. Johan De Mey. Beiden gaan zowel in op de technologische als functionele uitdagingen die hierbij naar boven kwamen in het UZ Brussel bij het toepassen van deze technieken in deze crisis situatie. Deze sessie vindt plaats op vrijdag 15 mei, 11.00 – 12.00 uur.

Gloria González Fuster (LSTS) bespreken op woensdag 20 mei, 2020, 14.00 – 15.00, de blijvende uitdaging van “AI & Data Protection Law” in de huidige COVID-19 crisis context. Hoewel de track & trace app discussie lijkt te zijn gaan liggen, blijven deze privacy technology uitdagingen zeker in EU context verder een rol spelen bij korte en lange termijn scenario’s.

Naast onderzoekers van de verschillende onderzoeksgroepen van de Vrije Universtiteit Brussel worden andere, internationale experten, waaronder die uit het Europese brede CLAIRE-netwerk uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan het debat. Aan het einde van iedere webinar wordt er ongeveer 15 minuten besteed aan vragen van het publiek. So come prepared!
